Alumni Spotlight Ryan Moroz
NAME: Ryan Moroz
CLASS OF: 2016
POSITION: Pitcher
CLUB SUMMER TEAM: North Winnipeg / Fort McMurray Giants
What school are you currently at and how many years have you been there? Any other schools you attended before your current school?
I’m currently not a student anywhere - I graduated from Minot State University in December of 2019. They recruited me straight out of high school, and I spent my entire university career there.
Where are you from? What high school did you attend?
I’m originally from St. Andrews, Manitoba, about half an hour north of HRSTC. I went to The Comp in Selkirk for grades 10 and 11, and went out to Okotoks for grade 12, the same year as Ryan Humeniuk, Jared Spearing, Andrew Asselin, and Tanner Bercier.
What was your club team?
My club team growing up was the North Winnipeg Pirates. Also, just to give them a mention in this interview, I spent the summers of 2017 and 2019 with the Fort McMurray Giants, which were the best baseball experiences of my life.
If you could tell your Grade 12 self something that could help him moving forward in life and ball, what would it be?
I would for sure tell myself to never take any opportunities for granted. Just because you worked hard to get somewhere or achieve something, doesn’t mean you can take your foot off the gas. That goes for everything; from baseball, to school, to whatever career you get into afterwards.
What major are you taking and why did you choose it?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Criminal Justice. The courses included in that major really made school fun and interesting, which is a huge part of succeeding in the classroom. The degree also recently helped me get accepted into the Edmonton Police Service.
How did being in the HRSTC prepare you for the challenges you face today?
The Home Run Sports Academy programs really helped me learn what hard work and discipline meant. Those lessons, again, don’t just apply to baseball; the values I gained through the Academy and the sport itself have helped me immensely in my work life after university.
How did you choose to attend Minot State?
Minot was an easy choice for me. The school was relatively close to home, had an academic scholarship program that my grades qualified for, was relatively small with a community feel to the athletic and academic programs, had good facilities, and great staff that turned around the program and became successful in a very short time frame. I’m extremely grateful for the time I had there and the person it helped me become.
